#teamCSSM 2022

Camberwell Sports and Spinal Medicine’s Athlete Sponsorship Program supports local athletes to be the best they can be.

Every year, Camberwell Sports and Spinal Medicine sponsors local athletes from a variety of sports to support them to meet the challenge in their chosen endeavour.  These athletes aren’t generally elite, but they have a passion for their sport and a desire to achieve something special. We love being part of their journey.

Over a 12 month period, as part of #teamCSSM, our sponsored athletes are paired with our team of practitioners and given full access to our world-leading facilities to enable them to take their performance to the next level.

For some of #teamCSSM, their goals are as simple as finishing their local fun run, for others it is to compete on the world stage.  Whatever their goals, we are happy to be there for the ride.

The Best Expertise. A Plan to Improve. Whatever Your Goal.

Shai O'Brien

Triathlete / Athlete / Nurse
Shai has been competing in triathlons since she was 15.
“I had been running, riding and swimming for enjoyment and convinced my parents to drive me from Bendigo to Melbourne to compete in a sprint distance event. Two weeks later I had a coach and that Summer I was competing for Victoria at two national events.”
She has since raced 10 half Ironmans and competed in multiple Sprint and Olympic distance events at the Gatorade/2XU series. Next on the list is Shai‘s first Ironman in Cairns in June.
Somehow, Shai trains up to 20 hours a week while also working as a nurse and midwife at the Royal Women’s. “I enjoy personally challenging myself, physically and mentally.  We have had a really hard time through the COVID-19 pandemic and training for triathlon has been the one thing that has kept me motivated, happy and able to keep going.”

Shai's goal -

This year I am hoping to compete in my first Ironman at Cairns in June and hopefully qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii!

Angus Wood

Runner / Cyclist / Student
Angus Wood’s focus on sport and fitness only began at the start of the covid pandemic.
“It started as a weight loss journey weighing 147kg going into the first lockdown and finishing that year about 60kg lighter.”
In lockdown, Angus kept himself entertained by running, cycling and working out in his home gym. “From there I started to find more of a passion and was more interested in the science of why and how I can improve my body to perform at a higher level.”
Over the last two years, he’s ticked off his first 100km ride, soon followed by his first half marathon at the end of 2020. Going into 2021, Angus says he is most proud of completing a 10km run in 39 minutes and completing his first marathon last October. “Now my focus is on triathlon performance and training for half distance triathlons.”Angus has found his new goals have provided a sense of community, especially at CSSM Run Club on Friday mornings. “I love numbers and stats and love to see where I’m improving and what areas I can change to become better.”In 2022, Angus’ goal is to complete a 70.3 Ironman and the Melbourne Marathon in November and then racing at Busselton 70.3 in December.

Angus's Goal -

"My first goal for 2022 is to complete a 70.3 Ironman. Overall though I would like to improve on my mental fitness as well, be more happy and content with what I've accomplished and what I'm currently capable of."
